Richard Dawkins - Queerer Than We Suppose: The Strangeness Of Science

Richard Dawkins is Oxford University's "Professor for the Public Understanding of Science." Author of the landmark 1976 book, The Selfish Gene, he's a brilliant (and trenchant) evangelist for Darwin's ideas. In this talk, titled, "Queerer Than We Suppose: The strangeness of science," he suggests that the true nature of the universe eludes us, because the human mind evolved only to understand the "middle-sized" world we can observe.

This is a great clip. I must say I think Richard Dawkins is over the top at times, but this was very well done. I feel science has only begun to ask the questions, let alone find all the answers. But the questions alone are fascinating.

Indeed, I didn't like the guy at all based on what I had seen of him (and his "supporters"), but this video has changed my mind. He is a decent guy after all ;)

Its funny though, "science"... Of the scientists I've spoken to on facebook they already think they know the answers, yet they haven't even asked the questions, they don't even know what the questions are. But they can tell you what's right or wrong regardless. Its funny what an "official" position in the system (classroom) can get you to believe and affect the way you think.

As a side observation, I posted this video in the group of scientists, not one of them have acknowledged it, because it defies what they (his followers) were taught in the classroom. If the speech had been by someone less "respected" by themselves you can bet they'd have plenty to say about it.

(That's my indirect way of saying while "science" is good potentially, people are being taught what's right and what's wrong based on what's already known/believed thus affecting the whole process of "discovery" - For example, one scientist thinks I need to "study logic" because when asked if we should investigate "everything that's possible" I responded with "it depends what your interests are and whether or not you intend to find the truth of the matter". It seems discovering the truth behind a potential possibility that you personally happen to be interested in is a waste of time according to what he was taught and believes regarding the "process of discovery and understanding". But we're the crazy ones :)
