PAPIER MACHE AND MARDI GRAS
©2010 by Diane Austin
Subliminal trespass
on your wits
that are chewed up
chewed up
and spit
right back at you
warped
by your own
considerations
The march of ideas
with faces
that do not belong
do not belong
to you
Yet
so often
unwittingly
you don these masks
these
substituted images
defective clones
dissembled personalities
in proud parade
with a liberty
of ownership
ownership
denying their
rightful owners
the privilege
of recreation
What temptation
is this art form!
this art form!
this masquerade!
The challenge
inconclusive adventure
This twisted fight
for space
hatched identities
in fancy
a papier mache existence
They will stick like lies
and trap you in disguise
Seemingly secured
behind these masks
resides
the true identity
of the performer
Dare
to see
Dare
to look
and
these facades
crumble
their voices
heard no more
