Welcome to The Dark Room.
The author William Gibson once described the modern western world as "hurtling down the freeway, but navigating only by looking in the rearview mirror to see what's going on behind you". Although we are moving at a fantastic rate of speed, and literally everything around us is evolving faster and faster, most of us only have the paradigms and habits and rules that we can glean from what's come before. Our personal operating systems are calibrated and optimized for the old paradigm, the old rules, the old game. In times of transition like the one we now find ourselves in, many cling to the comfort of tradition, while the more wiley members of each tribe begin scrambling to understand the new paradigm. The new opportunities it presents, and the new challenges it poses.

Like so many other things, communication itself is evolving faster than most of us can keep track of. As an animator, filmmaker and visual artist, I have spent a great deal of my life with an eye out for subjects worthy of bringing to life as an animation or a film. Not just good stories, but new ideas, new ways to communicate ideas, and new structures for old ideas. It is the latter that I will be discussing here - a new way to communicate some of the mankind's oldest and most highly regarded traditions.
The web is just one example of how communications technology has evolved to a place where storytelling itself is undergoing a rapidly excellerated evolution. The old paradigm of storytelling as a linear narrative is giving way to a hologrammatic or non-linear one, which is actually much more akin to the way the brain operates. The new paradigm in storytelling, or at least an exciting new mutation that I will be demonstrating here, is the ability to use a hyperlinked network of "idea clusters" and a non-linear web of associations that connect them in unique and interactive combinations. In other words, replacing the traditional linear narrative with a hologrammatic mindmap of the same subject. I call these "Hyperstories".

A couple of caviats about this first idea cluster: I dont claim to be in any way enlightened, or to have any kind of reliable way to access the future, or things that take place behind closed doors around seats of power far away from me. I am just as in the dark about what just happened, and what is happening, and what is about to happen as everyone else. In my search for some answers and in my natural curiosity about the uncertain new paradigm - I started looking into both the pessimistic and optimistic sides of this strange shift that seems to be affecting more and more of our cherished and dependable traditions and institutions.
Part of the research process involved alot of time on youTube - partly because the lack of corporate media filtering gives me access to a much wider and less bounded spectrum of debate, and partly because I love the sideshow aspect of how "out there" people can get without a floor director, or a script writer, or any kind of personal censorship or basic decorum.
It was hard not to notice that there was a definite "Battle of Realities" that had sprung up in the process of interpreting what really happened to us this last few years, what was the real meaning and importance of what had just happened. These interpretations are all snapshots from the reality tunnels (as the late great author Robert Anton Wilson calls them) of those that are presenting them. By presenting them in this idea sculpture, I do not endorse them, or necessarily believe them, but I have arranged them in a sort of "David Hockney" idea montage.

I have hung them on the walls of a sacred space that I would like to lead you through, or more precisely, invite you to explore according to your own fascination. Consider them to be exhibits in a strange museum, and consider their groupings and framing and, as with all good museums, be on the lookout for the ever-present possiblity of an ironic subtext in the arrangements, rather than looking at them in the obvious way. Please suspend judgement until you see all the films, no matter what order you watch them in. By watching them you are not acknowledging that any ideas are right or that you support them, and if they hit you in an uncomfortable or even offensive place, try to watch them as a spy, to understand the argument of the enemy.
My own personal stance on these matters is this: when does it EVER hurt to understand a little bit about new ways your pocket can be picked? It never hurts to be armed with knowledge, even if its a disturbing glimpse into the psyche of those diametrically opposed to your way of thinking. One final thought on this - if you are secure in your beliefs you should be able to withstand information presented to the contrary as well as information that reinforces your beliefs.
At the risk of belaboring the point, the ultimate objective of art is to take a person into scarry and unfamiliar areas. This is the role of the Psychopomp, to lead us past the boundaries we have set for ourselves, and give us, even sometimes against our will, a broader perspective, or at least a reason to hold tighter to what we already know.

At this point, one might ask, "what does any of this have to do with "The Great Work", initiatory tradition, or esoteric symbolism." There are several layers of reasons why I am interested the following cluster of webflix, but an obvious first answer is this: The modern initiate, the modern magickal warrior, the Awake or Awakening person, frequently begins the Work through a crisis that leads one to question the validity and reality of the "consensus reality." The initiatic path begins with a recognition and willingness to look behind the facade of consensus reality at the scarry unmentionables that most dont perceive. It is in this sense, of looking at possibilities for what lie behind the veil created by popular mass media, that we present this cluster of related webmovies.
The first idea cluster is entitled "What's The Worst That Could Happen?"
And again, before anyone gets offended by the content of any of these movies or ideas, please remember, that I dont necessarily believe or endorse these ideas, they are just an artistic collage that represents a sort of composite rendering of the collective fear that many americans are currrently experiencing. Namely, that we are not being given the entire truth about the new social, political, military, technological, financial, legal, climactic, seismic, or even galactic landscape, and for some reason, each of those arenas pose an agressive and largely unexpected threat to business as usual.
Isnt that a fear that we've all experienced at one time or another? That media and decent society combine to create a facade world that bears no relationship to "real reality". This is sort of the underlaying idea behind the "Matrix" movies. "Red pill or blue pill" - which reality do you want to live in?

The following cluster of web movies explores the theme that much of modern society is an artificial construct, and that consensus reality doesn't necessarily correspond to behind the scenes activity.
The first is "There is a Policeman Inside of All of Our Heads". It provides a stark and clear picture of how and when and why modern culture got lured into an artificially structured reality that serves the purposes of consumerism and crowd control, but denies many important aspects of the human psyche that are essential to the expressing of individuality and personal creativity.

Check it out, and return here to continue the tour, or as always, if you find a more interesting path, take that and return to this later.
The rest of these all fall under the general category of belief that things are MUCH worse than they seem, or are being portrayed by the media. Again, I do not endorse or claim to believe any of these movies, but I am very interested in the metapicture they paint. A warning - only watch these if you want to be scared - if you like adrenalin and aren't easily prone to depression.
Here are some more that paint a very different picture of things than what most generally suppose.

Some of these films can get a little over the top in places, but collectively they represent an emerging new collective reality that alot of people are starting to check into. I do not endorse them necessarily, but found every one fascinating - or at least eye-opening. I include them only to recognize that enough people are taking them seriously that they deserve at least a cursory glance.
The next cluster of movies all deal with the even darker theme - we are literally beset upon from all directions - what Gurdjieff would call "The Horror of the Situation".
I would like to reiterate that I dont necessarily believe or endorse any of the ideas presented in these films, but I can vouch for the fact that they are each in their own way, a powerful initiatory experience. As stated previously, the modern magician, the Awake or Awakening person, the initiate, must be able to look past the obvious, past the facade of media and advertising, and wake up to the possibility that there are more and more reasons to become informed. These films combine to paint an important and sort of unsettling picture of a world, and tread firmly on ground that is easily labeled "crackpot conspiracy theory". The following films are, in my opinion, very powerful because they are made by apparently credible medical professionals, researchers and people seemingly trying only to warn us about something very a serious threat to our health and welfare.
As mentioned previously, feel free to explore the related links and movies and subsequent chapters of the movies linked here. The beauty of a non-linear story is you are the director as well as viewer, and the learning experience can be as expansive as the internet itself.

And finally, the one that started this for me - noteable not just because of the fascinating message, but because of its own "Hyperstory" structure. The youtube movie that spawned (for me at least) a new style of communicating, it's called "Google SpiderGoats". click here for the link: (

After watching them, do you see why we call this room "The Dark Room?" Definitely not for the faint of heart, or for those who's ideals are easily challenged, but an addictively dark montage of a shadowy part of the collective psyche.
I look forward to comparing notes on what metameanings and what epiphanies occured to you as you watched these. Please share your experiences in the discussion below.
I would like to start this discussion with the following observation: The modern magical warrior, or for that matter any modern citizen needs to become aware of the invisible forces that shape and govern the observable world. Sometimes even when it's bad news, the initiate must peer behind the veil and act according to what's true, rather than what's common. A balance must of course be struck that keeps one from falling into total a paralysis of fear and depression. Healthy skepticism and above all PERSONAL RESEARCH is the only way to deal with uncomfortable alternate realities we are presented with every day.
More and more people coming together who have checked out of the reality that the official media is presenting and comparing notes amongst one another in a search for a deeper or more plausible, or maybe just a more palatable truth. The goal of The Great Network is to facilitate this global desire for a clearer picture of the less obvious aspects of our reality.
