The Great Network

More UNITED than we realize!

Not sure if this is the place to start this kind of threaded conversation, but I wanted to purpose a question that perhaps some of those on this group may be interested in answering

The question is if there is room today, in modern age, for another "Secret Society"?

Recently I've noticed a few new start ups, an occasional lodge opened with a new agenda or ideal that no other past group; would support or allow, and I like that, but in the age of so much diversity, is there really room for expansion, and still maintain some form of organization. Or, would a new group today serve better not being so organized?

What do you think?

You know I am all for a virtual one - online.
Having not been part of a real one though - I am not sure it would work LOL!
I think your spot on with the idea of a virtual one. That seems to me where things are going. But then, woudl some of the other work be possible to do in a non-group setting?

Maybe your a great one to ask, do you have any interest in being a part of one?
It is really tricky for me - I WOULD LOVE too, and of course being so close with Lon I have been tortured by not jumping in, but because we do the videos....I am however getting to the point where it seems more important to do the work, so YES - in fact I would be MOST INTERESTED in the idea..
Lon does a great on-line class on Initiation that is wonderfully effective. I took it a couple of years ago, and found it wonderful. I'd love to see a continuance of it. It's helped me to pursue joining a non-virtual Initiatory group.

The difficulty of creating an Initiatory society online is, in fact, Initiation. Maybe astral-based Initiations, like some groups do? I wonder if they're as profound as a physical one...

I think the biggest issue with most new Initiatory groups is that they're covering the same ground, reusing previous materials, etc. Jason Newcomb's New Hermetics seems to be a fresh idea, again, based on many previous teachings, but it's pretty close.

A lot of the old groups were started around a profound discovery of some type, whether it be the translation of ancient languages, the re-discovery of old ideas, etc. What recent discoveries can open the next chapter of secret societies?
Hello Andrew
That was my concern too - the actual process of INITIATION - I have been speaking to Chance about what could be done with 3d or motion graphics to a) alter the consciousness , b) deliver the"message" if you will - my feeling is that an ASTRAL ones is a) for me - how do I get there LOL!, and b) would it work / would I have the experience.

I do think there is plenty of new takes of previous teachings, and also profound discoveries - I also think the new science brings a lot and for me - modern english would be a great language to trade in : )
I think the trickiest thing about astral or virtual Initiation is testing for success. There are many established means of Initiation based upon real world, physical sensation. The idea is to bring the probationer in to a new level of awareness. To reproduce that astrally or virtually is rough. Motion graphics? Maybe. Is it verifiable? I think that's where I get stuck.
Agreed - I do not know - I know you can certainly use sound to do it - AND I have undergone some "new scientific" treatments that certainly altered my consciousness - I would say there is a good chance media - working with sound and both hemispheres etc could do it...Astral - I have no idea : )

I would be willing to give media a go for sure : )
I am so torn about the idea of secret societies....i love the idea of a safe environment in which to keep this information/wisdom alive..but another part of me thinks the information needs to get 'out there'....i have friends that are Roscicrucians....and they are forever saying 'we can't talk about that'....( because of promises they have made...)...i find it frustrating....i would hate to be in the position where i come across someone who really needs to hear something....and be bound by a promise not to say anything (which is why i have not joined one to date...)....
Good point Honey - it IS the time to share - but I think there is a different caliber of risk between sharing inner court and outer court information - or at least that is what I have been told : )
What about Mystery School instead of society - what would be the main difference?
I think some times the two are intermixed. Some mystery schools initiate, some do not. For instance, BOTA gives the option for some initiation.

The reason for all the secrecy usually has to do with an individual being ready and able to handle the information. It's a stepped system to make sure our minds can handle the secrets given to it. Also, to make sure we are committed to being custodians to the secret. It can be argued if a person has the right to hold a secret above someone else? In my opinion, yes. As we are all individuals and should be treating one another as sovereigns unto themselves, I also think that some people don't want to work for attainment, as they like life right where they are. Others want it, and are willing to work for it, and they deserve receiving that which they have worked for. To dump it to the masses is most likely going to be met with heavy opposition. It's like the Matrix; how many of those people really want to wake up?
/Tangent
I think everyone is making some very good points here, that there are certainly concerns with what the initiation is for (is it to confer knowledge/wisdom to those who elect it) or does it fabricate a cast system of those in the know vs. those who want to know.

The idea of a Mystery school is challenging, in that is assumes that the knowledge imparted is a part of that tradition, which absolutely dove tails into the question about WHAT exactly is being taught.

In the Rosicrucian AMORC tradition, it is a self administered initiation up to a point (shh, if anyone asks, I didn't say that), and in Freemasonry, in the lower degrees it is a specific in lodge operation that cannot be performed in any other way. The higher degrees provides an exemplar in situations where there are many who undertake the ceremony.

In the new model, i suppose my question is more if there is a degree (pardon the pun) of interest in this sort of system, or if the open source, D.I.Y. (do it yourself) education is the prevailing trend. Does that remove the necessity of there being an adapt vs. a practitioner, or is it open form, can it self communicated?

I think what Andrew said in the last post, with it being open source, it leaves a lot of room for dilution in the knowledge.
