All things begin with three things.+, -,and Reaction.This in turn creates Knowledge, Wisdom, and Truth,, then creating Mercy, Severity, Beauty, Victory, Glory, Foundation, and finally the Kingdom. The world as we know it now.The thing Humanity lacks is the missing link.... KNOWLEDGE.All this understood and applied will create the perfect EQUILIBRIUM.

Fact of the matter is that the only real secret that these societies keep is that there is no real secret. For the most part they'll teach you the same things you can learn reading the bible or any other holy book, the same things you can learn in any place of worship, the same things you should be taught by your parents, and the same things you know deep within yourself. Basic morality, to be an up standing citizen, to take care of your fellow man/woman, ten commandment stuff. It's wrapped in different allegory, stashed in various rituals, and even laid out in plain english. There are a thousand different ways to say it and these groups are good at making it as complicated as possible. What I think the church doesn't like about it is that they allow the practitioner to understand that they are just as divine as any priest, rabbi, or other holy man/woman. If you want the secret here is your 999th degree right here... You are GOD, You are Christ, You are Hiram, You are Allah, You are Moses, etc. Live in Love.

I would have to disagree wit you Nathan. Although I do enjoy bible study, and agree that being a good cristian(helping others) is important. What most church-goers that I know seen to be driven by is the idea of salvation versus eternal damnation. I don't think there is a wrong way to worship god, in any montistic form. I think dualism stands in the way for a lot of us. And even though what you have written in bold is true, many religious groups would call it blasphemy. What secret societies offered is very similar to what you find in the bible, but you won't hear what's in bold being preached in any church i ever heard of. In my personal opinion, understanding the story of Jesus Christ and his parables are the closest to what you would gain from a secret society. The story of Jesus raising Lazurus from the dead after three days could be interpreted as a ceremony. A rebirth. There are many other examples. I've learned more from the bible from reading other books and my own personal expierence than anything else. Faith is like the earth, in which we take root; hope is the water through which we are nourished; love is the air through which we grow; gnosis is the light through which we become fully grown.
